Mom Burnout is Real: 5 Tips to Cope and Reclaim Your Energy

I’m going to be real with you, mama—mom burnout is no joke. As a single work-from-home mom, I’ve hit that wall more times than I can count. It’s that feeling of being so mentally, emotionally, and physically drained that even the smallest decisions feel impossible. You snap over little things, you feel like you’re failing, and honestly, some days, you just want to hide in the bathroom for a moment of peace.

Burnout doesn’t just happen in the baby years. It can hit you at any stage of motherhood. Whether you’re juggling toddlers, school drop-offs, or teen drama, the exhaustion is real. And if you don’t have much of a support system, it can feel even heavier.

But here’s the good news—you don’t have to live in a constant state of survival mode. I’ve learned a few things along the way that have helped me pull myself out of that overwhelming space, and I want to share them with you.

1. Lower Your Expectations and Drop the ‘Perfect Mom’ Myth

There’s so much pressure on moms to do it all—homemade meals, spotless homes, Pinterest-worthy activities, a thriving career. And let’s be real, social media makes it look like other moms have it all together (spoiler: they don’t).

What I’ve learned? Sometimes, good enough is GOOD ENOUGH.

Instead of stressing about cooking a five-star meal after a long day, give yourself grace. A simple dinner that keeps everyone fed and happy is a win. If the dishes pile up for a night because you need to rest, that’s okay. Your worth as a mom is not defined by how much you get done in a day.

If you need quick, healthy meal ideas that don’t require hours in the kitchen, check out this meal planning guide. It’s been a lifesaver for me when I need easy, nutritious options without the stress.

2. Set Boundaries Without Guilt

For the longest time, I was saying ‘yes’ to everything—extra projects, late-night texts, doing it all myself—until I realized I was running on empty.

Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you’re selfish; it means you’re protecting your energy. Whether it’s telling your kids that mommy needs 15 minutes of quiet time, saying ‘no’ to commitments that don’t serve you, or asking for help (yes, even if it’s hard), boundaries are a game changer.

One of my favorite tools for setting boundaries is journaling. Writing things down helps me get clear on what I need and where I need to draw the line. If you’re new to this, try using these journal prompts to help you define and enforce your boundaries.

3. Support Your Nervous System

Mom burnout isn’t just mental—it’s physical, too. When we’re in constant ‘go mode,’ our nervous system is in overdrive, making it even harder to calm down.

Here’s what’s helped me regulate my nervous system:

  • Sleep – I know, easier said than done. But making small changes like cutting caffeine after 2 PM, putting my phone away an hour before bed, and using this magnesium supplement has made a huge difference in my ability to rest.

  • Breathwork – I swear by box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4). It helps reset your body when stress hits hard.

  • Adaptogens – I started using this adaptogenic coffee to support my energy levels without the crash, and it’s been a game-changer. It’s freakin’ delicious and I have feel-good energy!

4. Prioritize Fun & Self-Care (Yes, YOU!)

You cannot pour from an empty cup, mama. I used to feel guilty about taking time for myself until I realized that when I’m burnt out, I’m not the mom I want to be.

Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. It can be as simple as a walk outside, a five-minute meditation, or doing your nails at home (I love using these press-on nails for a quick pick-me-up). Find something that fills your cup and make it a non-negotiable.

5. Disconnect to Reconnect

After a long day, it’s tempting to scroll mindlessly on your phone or binge-watch a show, but sometimes, that just adds to the mental clutter. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I try to unplug and do something that actually resets my brain—like journaling, stretching, or reading a book.

One of my favorite ways to unwind is with a good book and a cozy cup of this calming tea. It helps me disconnect from the chaos and actually relax.

You Deserve to Feel Good, Mama

Burnout is real, but you don’t have to stay stuck in it. Start small—pick one of these tips and try it this week. Little changes add up, and before you know it, you’ll start feeling more like yourself again.
